Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
