Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
